I didn't notice the writing on the front of my husband's dresser for 12 years. As boys growing up in the same bedroom, he and his twin brother carved their names multiple times in the wood. The dresser's status as a family heirloom, formerly their grandparents', did not faze them. The writings' invisibility seems fitting for the way we forget what we did and felt as a child.
